Hey people!

I just wanted to wish everyone a big Congratulations for the good effort done for O's! Now that we'd known where we're gonna further our studies, i'd wish you guys BEST WISHES! Make 4D proud of you no matter where you're going!

2 more days to sch reopening for those goin to JC, so let's tighten ourselves and continue working hard!

No matter which part of Singapore we're gna study in, we're once a NanChiau-rian and part of 4D. Work hard; Play hard! Don't forget that we were once a big, happy family! Everyone of us are just a phone call away, so if we'd met with some problems, dont hesitate to call!

So many things had happened in these 2 yrs, so many ups and downs, we've stood with each other all along. Honestly speaking, I'd once despised myself for ending up in 3D, but now, I feel really proud of myself to be a 3D-rian. You guys've been great!

YO everybody~~ wooots officially 2nd time posting. OKAY Lets start.
Firstly, Mother tongue results was out on tuesday. Yea and 4d did freaking well hahaha, 10 A1s Out of 22 A1s . YES!! Although im not one of them =((.
Secondly, After the mother tongue results, it was also the GCE O Levels English Language Oral Examination hohoho. and the topic was about the elderly @.@. Quite Okay ba. Hope everyone will do well for it! rofl.
Thirdly, On Thursday we sat for the Mathematics Test also set in cambridge this year but the paper was for brunei >< and we did Only the paper 2. NO TIME FINISH for me. hahaha.
Fourthly, Another MATHETICS TEST on friday. NO TIME FINISH TOO, also for me. =). After THAT Fnn chiong from after recess around 11 to 7 plus in the night @.@ ( sorry only for F&N PPL).
SATURDAY. which is Today, MOCK EXAMINATION for SCIENCE(PHYSICS). Hope Mr Goh KW wont NAG about our results =X.

And CLASS HOODIE, 40 DOLLARS IF IM NOT WRONG. those who see this post can bring MONEY luh, on monday, I hope i will see it too. It would look really cool yea. ahaha. 4d r0x.

Unmotivated 4Ds

Today our class once again angered Miss Tan. It had been the second time we had made her so frustated in a week. Should I say wonderful, of course not. I bet Miss Tan had been losing faith and trust in our class day by day. Perhaps she thinks that we are worse than her 1I students. There is nothing wrong it, and maybe is worse than she thinks.
This post is going to be harsh, and some people may be offended. However what I said are facts. If you are going to be offended, it means that YOU are one of them that caused Miss tan to be angry with us. Miss tan had been very understanding from the start of the year. She would not scold us often unless a couple of us have not done our homework repeatedly. The holiday homework was given before our june holidays but Miss Tan extended the deadline for some studens, but there are still some LAZY students who do not take pride in their work. These people cause our class to be scolded for nothing. Other teachers have been looking down on us. So is it their first impression of 4D or the attitude towards our work? I bet we know the answer. I hope that Miss Tan will be looking forward to coming our class instead of having the fear to conduct lessons in our class. So please hand in the homework on time!Let Miss Tan gained trust and confidence in us once again.=D

These are what we covered in chem for today. Those who missed the lesson, hope this helps.

ALKANES

General Formula of alkanes :
1 carbon - Methane (CH4) [Molecular Mass - 16]
2 carbons - Ethane (C2H6) [Molecular Mass - 30]
3 carbons - Propane (C3H8) [Molecular Mass - 44]
4 carbons - Butane (C4H10) [Molecular Mass - 72]
5 carbons - Hexane (C6H14) [Molecular Mass - 86]

Formula : n carbons - (C(n)H(n+2))

All alkanes consist of only single bonds.
All alkanes are saturated because each carbon atom is bonded to a maximum of 4 atoms.

Alkanes are the simplest members of the hydrocarbon family:
-Contains only hydrogen and carbon atoms.
-Only have single C-C bonds.

Members of the alkane homologous series will have:
-Similar chemical properties.
-A series of physical properties as a result of an increase in the size & mass of the molecules.

Physical Properties Of Alkanes
CH4 Methane - B.P. -161 (Mr 16)
C2H6 Ethane - B.P. -89 (Mr 30)
C3H8 Propane B.P. -42 (Mr 44)

Physical Properties of Alkanes
-Short chain lengths ( 1 < n < 4 ) are gases at room temperature.
-Medium chain lengths ( 4 < n < 17 ) are liquids at room temperature.
-Long chain lengths ( n > 17 ) are solids at room temperature.
>>> as the number of carbons increase, the boiling point of alkanes increases.

1. Physical Properties
-They are covalent molecules with intermolecular forces between the atoms. Hence they have a low boiling point.
-The boiling point increase as the number of carbon atoms in the molecule increases.
-As the molecules get larger and larger, they become less flammable as the molecules burns less easily when heat is applied.

1.Physical Properties
-Most alkanes are liquids or gases at room temperature.
-They are insoluble in water.
-The compounds become more viscous as the longer molecules get tangled together.
-The density increases when the molecules are bigger.

Chemical Reactions of Alkanes
-In general, alkanes are very unreactive, as their C-C and C-H bonds are very strong.
-They do not react with most chemicals, like acids, bases and oxidising agents.
-However, under certain conditions, alkanes undergo 2 types of chemical reactions:
1)Combustion
2)Substitution

Chemical Reactions of Alkanes
1)Complete Combustion - exothermic reaction
All alkanes burn in pletiful supply of air to form carbon dioxide and steam:
CH4(g) + 202(g) -> CO2(g) + 2H20(g)
Methane + Oxygen -> Carbon dioxide + steam

Incomplete combustion
>>When there isn't enough oxygen present, this can lead to the formation of carbon(soot) or carbon monoxide.
>>Carbon monoxide(CO) is poisonous. If you breath in enough carbon monoxide, you will die from internal suffocation as it blocks oxygen from being absorbed into the red blood cells in the haemoglobin.

2)Substitution reaction
Reaction with Chlorine
Alkanes react with chlorine in the presence of light. For example, Methane reacts with chlorine.
CH4(g) + Cl2(g) -> CH3Cl(g) + HCl(g)
Methane(g) + chlorine(g) -> chloromethane(g) + hydrogen chloride(g)

A substitution reaction is one in which an atom or a group of atoms replace other atoms in a molecule.

The substitution reactions of alkanes with chlorine will not take place in darkness. Light is needed to start the reaction. The light energy is used to break the covalent bonds in the chlorine molecules to produce chlorine atoms.

CH3Cl - Chloromethane
CH2Cl2 - Dichloromethane
CH3Cl3 - Trichloromethane
CCl4 – tetrachloromethane

ALKENES

-All names end with ~ene.
-Alkenes is another homologous series of unsaturated hydrocarbons with the general formula of C(n)H(2n).
-Alkenes are called unsaturated hydrocarbons because they have ONE double carbon-carbon covalent bond in them (C=C).
-They are more reactive than alkanes.

2 carbons - Ethene (C2H4)
3 carbons - Propene (C3H6)
4 carbons - Butene (C4H8)
5 carbons - Pentene (C5H10)
6 carbons - Hexene (C6H12)

-Alkenes form a homologous series; all members in the series have similar molecular formulae and chemical properties.
-Their physical properties changes slightly as they become bigger; eg. The boiling points increases with increasing size.
-They are different from the successive member by a -CH2- group.

The two structures are of the SAME PROPENE. Only the position of the double bond is different.
These are called ISOMERS – Organic compounds with the same chemical properties but different chemical structures.

CRACKING

What is cracking?
-Big organic molecules like crude oil as they do not burn easily and have a high density (high).
-Hence they are not very useful and have to be processed into smaller units by cracking.
-Most of the useful fractions are smaller in molecular mass. Eg. LPG, petrol and jet fuel.

How is cracking done?
-Cracking is done by passing the big alkane molecule in the form of vaporized oil over a solid catalyst at a high temperature.
-Big oil molecules will break up into small oil molecules; this mixture is then separated by fractional distillation.

Uses of cracking
1. Big hydrocarbon molecules are broken into smaller hydrocarbon molecules for use as motor fuels.
-The smaller molecules burns more easily, is lighter and more environment-friendly.
2. Cracking is a way of making alkenes. A lot of ethene used for making of plastic (polyethene) and ethanol is produced in this manner.

C20H42 -> C12H26 + C8H16
C6H14 -> C4H10 + C2H4

3. Cracking is used to make hydrogen gas for Haber process and used as fuels in rockets.

C12H26 -> C12H24 + H2
C22H46 -> C12H24 + 5C2H4 + H2

Chemical Properties of alkenes
1. Combustion : Alkenes burn in air to form CO2 and H2O.
CxHy + (x+y)/2 O2 -> xCO2 + xH2O
C2H4 + 3O2 -> 2CO2 + 2H2O
C3H6 + 9/2O2 -> 3CO2 + 3H2O
C4H8 + 6O2 -> 4CO2 + 4H2O

-If the combustion is incomplete (insufficient supply of oxygen) the combustion will produce and would form carbon dioxide, water vapour, soot and carbon monoxide.
-In general, alkenes give a more sooty flame compared to alkanes as alkenes have a higher % of carbon per unit mass and because of the C=C bond.

2. Addition reactions
-Alkenes having one C=C as a functional group is quite reactive.
-The double bond undergoes addition reactions with small molecules like bromine, chlorine, hydrogen and water etc.

a)Bromination
Bromine reacts with ethane to form a colourless compound, reaction occurs at the C=C bond.
Chemical equation: C2H4(aq) + Br2(aq) -> C2H4Br2(aq)

-Ethene would rapidly decolourise liquid bromine to form dibromethane but not ethane.
-This is also used as a test for alkenes and other unsaturated hydrocarbons.
-Ethene is an unsaturated compound as it can add on other atoms;
-All alkenes are unsaturated.
-Alkanes which cannot have other atoms added is saturated.
-The reaction can be used as a test for alkenes.

Observations:
-Alkenes react with reddish brown bromine and decolourises it quickly.
-If the alkene is a liquid, the 2 are mixed together in a test tube and shaken.
-If the alkene is a gas, bubble the gas through aqueous bromine.

3. Hydrogenation
-Alkenes react with hydrogen to produce alkanes
-Conditions: Nickel is used as a catalyst at 180°C
-Hydrogenation is used in the food industry to convert vegetable oil to margarine

How is margarine formed?
-Unsaturated vegetable oils (alkanes) can be partially saturated by hydrogenation to produce a soft solid known as margarine.
-Hydrogenation increases the molecular mass of the vegetable oils.
-This increases the strength of the intermolecular attractions and hence increases its melting point. Thus liquid vegetable oil changes into a solid.
-Vegetable oils are polysaturated and are healthier.
Poly = large molecules
unsaturated = alkenes = contain C=C bond

4. Hydration
-Is also called catalytic addition of steam
-Production of alcohol from alkene
Conditions:
1. react with steam at 300°C
2. using phosphoric acid as catalyst
-A molecule of water is added to the alkene molecule
Example 1: C2H4 + H2O -> C2H5OH (ethanol)
Ethanol is used as solvent for perfume, cologne etc.
Example 2: C3H6 + H2O -> C3H7OH (propanol)

Today english lesson was not cancelled,hurray!Although miss tan was requested by us to have the lessons, she seems to be glad that there are students who are more than willing to attend her lessons.Perharps she has forgiven us.I hope so.=D
Anyway the english enrichment lesson we had attended today is not as fruitful as I expected.It was only doing the comprehension and composition.I thought that the teacher would be imparting us some useful skills to improve our language. However, some of us have decided to change our class blogskin to the stuff toy that cf,oli,and nic ho had bought.(I don't know what is it called) Anyone had any objections?

hi everybody...brian here...1st time posting...i guess today's chem was quite cmi, so i shall jot down some of the things we learnt today for those who didn't come or didn't pay attention...i will also be adding stuff from the textbk also...

Chemistry Chapter 20: Fuels and Crude Oil

A fuel is a substance that is burnt to produce heat energy (Unimportant...jus nid to noe oni)

1. Uses of fuels:

-> Provide energy for vehicles

-> Produce heat

-> Generate Electricity

2. Sources of fuels are petroleum and natural gas. Fossil fuels include coal, petroleum and natural gas (methane) which are the remains of living plants and animals.

3. These fuels are usually found deep in the seabed as the region under the seabed experiences higher pressure and the sand retains more heat, which causes the remains of dead animals to petroleum and natural gas. These fuels are also extracted by drilling an oil rig into the seabed.

This is an example of an oil rig, a real one...Ms hani said that there is high pay for the people working there, but the risk is big as if there were any accidents to have occured, there would be very little help and assistance would take a long time to arrive, plus, u dun get to go home for mths...

4. Petroleum and natural gas are hydrocarbons - made up of carbon and hydrogens only.

5. Natural gas contain mainly methane.

6. Crude oils are a mixture of hydrocarbons. They are seperated into different oils by using fractional distillation. They have different uses and different boiling points. These oils are insoluble in water and burn in air.

7. Alright, this at my right is a fractional distillation for crude oils, and u will need to remeber all the 7 oils and in the correct order...here's a way to rmbr the oils (in order): BLDKNPP

Petroleum gas

Petrol (gasoline)

Naptha

Parrafin (Kerosene)

Diesel

Lubricating oils

Bitumen

* It reads from the lowest to the highest. Jiayou in remebering.

8. Problems of fossil fuels:

-> There are limited amounts of fossil fuels on Earth and cannot be replaced.

-> Coal Burns and produces a lot of ash and sulphur dioxide which causes air pollution and is expensive to be converted into liquid and gaseous fuels.

-> It is important to conserve energy from fuels because they are needed to make plastic, drugs and other chemicals.

Alternative fuels:

-> Palm oil alternative for diesel

-> Hydrogen gas

-> Water

-> Solar energy

Alright Organic compounds can be classified into 2 different families:

~ Homologous Series*

~ Functional Group*

Homologous Series

1. A general formula

Each member differ to the next one by a CH2. It means they have one carbon and 2 hydrogen atoms more than the previous members.

2. Similar chemical properties

Members of the same group can be made by similar methods and have the same similar reactions.

3. Members of each group shows a steady change in physical properties (such as boiling point) as a result of the increase in the size of the olecules.

More carbon - higher boiling point.

Examples:

C2H4 will have a higher boiling point than CH2

C2H6 will have a higher boiling point than CH4

Bitumen has a higher boiling point than petrol

Functional Group

Each organic family has its own reactive atoms that determines the chemistry of the organic member. These groups of atoms is called funtional group.

Compounds with the same functional group have similar chemical properties.

Homologous Series : Functional Group

1. Alkanes : No functional Group

2. Alkenes : C=C (double bond between 2 carbons)

3. Alcohol : -OH (Hydroxyl Group)

Chain length

->Refers to the number of carbon atoms in an organic molecule

->Chain length will affect the physical properties of the compounds.

->If the chain length is longer, the boiling point and melting point will increase and the density will be higher. If the chain length is shorter, the boiling point and melting point will decrease and the density will be lower.

Examples of Alkanes are:

Methane, CH4

Ethane, C2H6

Propane, C3H8

Butane, C4H10

Pentane,C5H12

Examples of Alkenes are:

Ethene, C2H4

Propene, C3H6

Butene, C4H8

Pentene, C5H10

Examples of Alcohol:

Methanol, CH3OH

Ethanol, C2H5OH

Propanol, C3H7OH

Butanol, C4H9OH

Pentanol, C5H9OH

Similarities:

I guess most of us are really remorseful on what we had done today. I don't have any comments. But I just wna say a big ' SORRY' to Ms Tan. Till now, despite many times of being scolded/nagged.. What's there to say if none of us are willing to give ourselves a chance to learn hard? All of us are the same, we always pray for good results, but seriously, how many of us really tried to study ? It all goes th same for everything tht we'd done, it's all our attitude. Perhaps, we shall really try thinking hard what's the correct thing to do and not be so self-centred. Let's all try to put in the best efforts in everything we do, just a little harder and strive for excellence. Honestly speaking, we know deep in tht lots of people are looking down on us, so shan't we just prove it to them? Hard work + Attitude, I guess, tht's th best way to success. It's now all up to us to decide wht we really wnt. We should'nt seek for motivation from others, we should self-motivate. Once again, SORRY MS TAN, we know we'd disappointed you yet agn.

Here's a gentle reminder to all Food and Nutrition students, do take note that the Coursework Part A would be due on 28-04-2008, which does not take a mathematics genius like Alison, to figure that submission of the assignment is in eight days time. And even a mathematics idiot like Wei Yeow could safely of a day. With mandeduce that we have less than 2 weeks to complete it, and by the time this post is up, we probably have only a week plus a fraction y other tests and assignments lurking in the following week, the Coursework Part A sheds a new light on the meaning of 'daunting'.

For those who are still at Task Analysis or just at the fundamentals of Research and Development, I urge each and every single individual to step on the accelerator and change into second gear. Exceling in Food and Nutrition is actually a simple feat, just arduous. The coursework, in particular, doesn't require much thinking. In my opinion, it just consists of chunks and chunks of words, and perhaps even repetition is present. It emulates the river system, sometimes going around in circles, that signifies the repetition, and along its course, smaller rivers or distributries might join it, eventually all flowing into a sea or a lake. The 'body' is mainly made up of loads of information, which could be found on books or the internet, and therefore does not require much intelligence. As long as a person is hardworking, and devotes his time time to perfecting the coursework, it is with great belief that excellent scores would follow. In the world of Food and Nutrition, it is the dilligent student that would be rewarded, and not like for some other subjects; History, for instance, where a student can slack around yet obtain top marks just because of his great understanding of the it or fluent intepretation of the source.

Meanwhile, Design and Technology and Arts students, relish on the fact that you do not have such an urgent deadline to meet, nor would be subjected to any lambasting by Mrs Foo; but at least those who are in Food and Nutrition would not be irritated by sawdust in the eyes, paint on the shirts, and lastly, distracted by some distinctive feature on a teacher's face. ;)

I watched from as distance as this blog frantically calls out to me. 'Save me!', I could make out the words that its html coding was 'mouthing'. Being the magnaimous person I was, I withdrew into its malevolent embrace, in an attempt to stop the rot (or so many has termed the condition of this blog).

We had our first ever independent Nan Chiau High School Sports Day today, and congratulations of utmost sincerity I have for those who boldly participated in the events. I believe they include,

#11 Lim Huah Yun
#22 Tan Yi bin Alison
#24 Ho Yao Jie Nicholas
#31 Quek Yuen Chai

If memory serves me right, those are all the participants from our humble little class. Though if I had missed out anyone's name, do yourself justice by editing this post.

Our house captain, Yuen Chai, brought us honours by clinching several gold medals, as well as a commendable silver. Although Red House finished sencond at the end of the event, and several points behind eventual champions Yellow House, I think that the efforts that we had put in easily overweigh all the other houses'. And though we came first runner-ups in the 4 times 100 metres baton passing relay, credits must by given to Ho Yao Jie Nicholas and Quek Yuen Chai for their efforts. Kudos to the both of them, and I hereby salute the both of you. -.-^

Mid-Year Examinations are approaching. And like what our dear old mathematics teacher Mr Tan has so often reminded us of (by now it should have been clearly etched in everyone's minds) , we really ought to kill/slay/destroy/annihilate the enemy LAZINESS (oh my, speaking of such a fearsome thing just sent shivers down my spine) .

Many of us do not realised it, but Mr Tan's a veteran in the battlefield. He has 'been there, done that'; and if he claims the enemy's here, then his words aren't meant to be taken lightly (besides, show him some sympathy, he mentions about killing the enemy literally everyday) . I suspect the enemy is using guerilla warfare, acting upon us slowly, bit by bit, and creeping up behind us to carry out a back stab. Such is the fearsome might of the enemy LAZINESS (gosh, don't make me say that word again) . If we are complacent, that enemy will really infest us, and kill us all.

I don't know how many times Mr Goh has said that teachers in the staffroom spectualate that we would bring down the entire level's MSG (perhaps all teachers in the staffroom work as part-time fortune tellers, and all possess a crystal ball) , but we just have to prove them wrong. Action bellows in a voice much deeper than words, and at the upcoming Mid-Year Examinations, I hope we all achieve desirable results.

Wow, now I know what my boys are thinking. Aiya, girls are everywhere in Nan Chiau. If you put in effort in a relation, definitely, it will be rewarded one day, but also got to depend on fate. If you find new target, please go ahead, maybe the new one is better. Remind me of my good old days......
